Roger Ray Locklear, age 80, Pembroke, NC departed this life on Thursday, November 28, 2024, surrounded by family and friends. He was born March 15, 1944, in Robeson County, NC to the late Velton and Seressie Holmes Locklear. Mr. Locklear was preceded in death by siblings, Bobby Locklear, Leo Locklear, Tony Lockler, and Annie Lee Locklear.
Mr. Locklear was retired from LOF Manufacturing and the Public Schools of Robeson County. He was an avid fisherman and hunter, but sitting in his deer stand was definitely one of his favorite hobbies. After a long day of work and farming, Mr. Roger returned home daily as Papa Roger to the many children that his wife babysat over years. He was affectionately known as “Papa” to many children over the years, holding them in his lap while he rested in his recliner. Papa Roger filled the role as a grandpa to many children outside his own grandchildren. His love for children was extended far and wide.
Another of his greatest joys was planting and harvesting his garden every summer and fall. After picking each bounty of peas, you could always find him setup in Linda’s parking lot in Pembroke, any week day selling bushels of peas. Although he enjoyed selling to the public, his passion for gardening was genuinely intended for his beloved wife, Mary, who enjoyed filling her freezer to prepare delicious, homemade meals for their family multiple times per day, every day of the week.
Mr. Locklear was a devoted member and past Sunday School teacher at New Point Baptist Church in Lumberton, NC.
