James Burns Obituary

James Burns, age 90, passed peacefully on February 8, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. Born August 3, 1935, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. James relocated to Pembroke, North Carolina, 40 years ago. He is predeceased by his wife of fifty years, Ola Burns (Sampson). As well as his father, John T. Burns; his mother, Evelyn Burns; seven siblings; and his daughter, Betty Hull. He is survived by five children: Georgeanna Pugh of Pembroke, NC, John Fields of Philadelphia, PA, Angela Starr (Robert) of Princeton, NC, Daniel Fields of Pembroke, NC, and Ann Vera (Peter) of Chicopee, MA. He is also survived by nineteen grandchildren, thirty-seven great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces and nephews. James was a devoted Christian, faithful husband, and proud father. He was a servant-hearted member of his community and lived a life marked by humility, generosity, and unwavering faith.

James grew up with strong values that guided him throughout his life. He honorably served his country in the United States Marines, carrying that sense of duty and commitment into everything he did thereafter. He retired from UNC Health Southeastern in Lumberton, North Carolina, where he worked as a security guard for many years.

A longtime member of Harpers Ferry Baptist Church, he faithfully served as a deacon and was deeply involved in the church community. James also served in the men’s choir, home visitations, and many other duties, which included ensuring the preacher had water. His walk with Christ was evident not only in his words but in his actions. He was always ready to help, encourage, and pray with others. His church family was a central and joyful part of his life.

He also treasured his close circle of friends, sharing fellowship, stories, and steadfast support over the years. Known for his dependable nature and warm spirit, he was someone people could always count on. Throughout his life, James was a quiet but constant servant in his community, offering his time and effort wherever there was a need. Whether through church work, volunteering, or simply helping a neighbor. He gave generously and without seeking recognition. James will be deeply missed.
