of Walter “Sweetie” and Flossie Bullard Chavis, “Mr. Grady,” as he was known, was
preceded in death by his parents, his son Brian Chavis, and his granddaughter Brianna
Kate Locklear, and siblings Wilson Chavis, Willam “Can” Chavis, Francis Chavis, and
Dosey Chavis. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Cynthia Chavis, and daughter

(Sequoyah), Cassidy, Caileigh, grandsons Brett Philip Locklear, Ryan Flanagan, and

Mr. Grady attended Prospect High School. He went on to serve his country with honor
and dignity in the United States Navy and later as a reservist in the Army National
Guard. After he returned from service, he graduated from Pembroke State College.
Upon graduation, he began working as the Director of the Robeson County Water
Department, where he served until his retirement.
Mr. Grady came to know Jesus at the young age of eleven years old. He gave his heart
to Jesus on Monday, June 14, 1954 at 7 p.m. after surviving a near fatal accident where
he had his first encounter with the Lord. In 1973, Mr. Grady answered God’s call for him
to preach and tell others about the love and saving grace of Jesus Christ. For more than
52 years he served as an evangelist to his home church of Island Grove Baptist and
other churches where he was asked to bring the word of God. He also served as a
Sunday School teacher.
Mr. Grady enjoyed getting out, meeting, and talking to others. He had a unique way of
making his presence known. His whistling was affectionately recognized by many as
well as the smile that accompanied it. His positive and friendly outlook guaranteed that
he never met a stranger.
He loved his family dearly and spent time with them as often as he could. He was a
beloved husband, father, grand and great grandfather and friend to all. His love and zest
for life will be forever cherished and will live on in the memories of those he leaves
behind.
Funeral Services will be held at Island Grove Baptist at 3:00 p.m. on Wednesday, May
21st. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until the funeral hour.
