Edwin (Eddie) Matchett, Jr was born on October 2, 1938 in
Washington, DC - to Elizabeth and Edwin S Matchett, Sr. He joined
the Heavenly Army November 22, 2023. He is survived by his wife
Christine Matchett of 53-years, his 2 brothers John Matchett of
Columbus, Ohio and Nelson Matchett of College Park, Maryland, his
5 children: Elizabeth Brock and spouse Arthur, Stephen Matchett and
spouse Shelia, Edwin E Matchett, Anne Frances Ward and JoAnn
Ellis. Grandfather of 11 - Tawanna and Alex of Pembroke; Jessica
and Richard of the Monroe, NC. With 6 other grandchildren living
away for the area. Great-grands: Harvey Dean and Grabriel, Chance
and Kayden, Elijah and Evelyn, Marcus and Pierce all of the area,
Michael, Theresa and Richard, Brittany, Alicia and two others living
outside the area. And 4 great-great-grands.
He was a confirmed and acting Christian of Island Grove Baptist
Church. He was a loving and doting father, grandfather and great-
grandfather. He enjoyed spending time with his family. He loved to
talk and meet people. His friendly personality and heart warming
attitude just drew people to him. He was very protective of his wife
and family. Always making sure they were safe and secure. He took
his duty to his government very seriously. Even after his years of
service, he still held to his secrets about the time he served.
He was a veteran who served in the Army for 13 years. He was a
Vietnam War survivor. He was the commander of the Honor Guard.
He was instrumental in getting this program started here in the
Robeson County area. He loved his church. Serving by helping to
make sure the church van was always up and ready to go. Keeping it
safe and clean. Retired from Rey Magnet wire working the swing shift
after 15 years. He was a jack of all trades. Loved his family and
community. He was a people person. He didn’t meet a stranger and
loved to talk.
He loved to fish. He respected all women and held them in the
highest regard. He was a true gentleman making sure he opened
doors, they were in a safe environment and always treated them like
the treasures they are.
He was surrounded by family and loved ones all his life. Even upon
his leaving this Earth, family was there for him. He will be missed
greatly. He leaves behind his loving family and a host of host of friends and acquaintances.
