Maxton~ Mrs. Iona L. Oxendine, 89, of 1188 Red Hill Rd., Maxton was born May 31, 1921 to the late Mr. Neil Archie Lowery and Mrs. Leola Locklear went HOME to be with the Lord on Wednesday, November 3, 2010 at Hospice of Scotland.
Mrs. Oxendine is preceded in death by her husband, Mr. Medlin Oxendine; two daughters, Mrs. Treva Pierce and Mrs. Marilyn Pierce; one son-in-law, Mr. Elmer Pierce.
The funeral will be conducted Saturday, November 6, 2010 at 3:00 p.m. in Preston Gospel Chapel with Bro. Steve Locklear, Bro. John Pat Locklear & Bro. Louis Locklear officiating. Burial will follow in the Preston cemetery.
Mrs. Iona was a devoted Christian, wife, mother, grandmother, sister and aunt. She worked alongside her husband on the farm before becoming a teacher assistant at Prospect School.
After she retired from the schoolhouse she began babysitting her grandchildren. Her son Reginald fondly refers to her as the first woman he ever loved. Her daughter Freida remembers her for her strong Christian guidance in the home. Her youngest son, Daryl, remembers especially how she encouraged him on difficult days around the house when the other brother and sisters were married and away. Her two remaining brothers and one sister have special fond memories as well of being a second mama to them.
She leaves behind to cherish her memories, two sons, Dr. Reginald Oxendine and wife, Peggy of Pembroke and Mr. Daryl Oxendine and wife, Penny of Maxton; one daughter, Mrs. Freida Dial of the home; two brothers, Mr. Fulton Lowery and Mr. Walter Lowery both Pembroke; one sister, Mrs. Annie J. McGirt of Maxton; nine grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
